Languages at Work: From Meaning to Machines – Translation and Interpreting Today

In the last few years, the work of translators—and the way translation is taught—has changed dramatically. Translation is no longer just “typing a text into another language.” Today, it is a workflow: understanding meaning, preparing the source, using technology wisely, and then correcting, fine-tuning, and adapting the result for a real client and purpose. This workshop introduces students to this full workflow through practical activities, guided analysis, and a comparison of real translation solutions.

Průběh

In this workshop, we will explore where meaning is created in language and why professional translators must notice nuance, tone, and context. We will also look at what client communication may look like and how it can be improved. You will try hands-on activities, including improving machine-translation output and spotting what can go wrong when errors slip through. We will also briefly introduce interpreting and how it differs from translation. Finally, you will translate a short message yourself and compare your version with a published translation. This workshop is available in English, with Czech as the language for our translations and commentaries.

Katarína Nemčoková začínala pedagogicky zaměřeným anglickým jazykem a literaturou a postupně dospěla k překladu a tlumočení. V posledních letech se pustila také do lingvistické analýzy amerických reklam. Překlad a anglickou lingvistiku vyučuje své studenty v oboru Anglický jazyk pro manažerskou praxi na Fakultě humanitních studií. Protože angličtina je jazyk světový, občas se Katarína Nemčoková podívá do světa a motivuje k tomu i své studenty. „Díky programům Erasmus, Work and Travel a podobným nabídkám to studenti vůbec nemají těžké a rádi mě poslechnou.“
